After my wedding, a guest shared a negative impression of something with one of my bridesmaids. I had put serious time, money, and emotion into that day. My first instinct was to let it take up space in my head.

But I had already learned that lesson during planning. I had a family member keep pitching a hometown wedding long after I had signed the destination contract. I had to tell them directly: I will end this conversation if we stay on a decision that is already final.

Distractions rarely look like distractions. They look like feedback, options, and opinions from people who love you. The filter I use: does this move me toward the thing I have already chosen, or does it just create noise?

As a leader, protecting your focus means learning to tell the difference between feedback that is a gift and feedback that is just someone else’s anxiety wearing a helpful face.
